Aromatics for self care

Like many people, I have always been drawn to the aromatic scents from plants, fruits, and flowers.  I qualified as an aromatherapist back in 2000, gaining valuable insights into the therapeutic benefits of essentials oils and knowledge of how to use them safely.

Aromatic plants have been around for thousands of years and used in many cultures for their healing properties. The birth of aromatherapy was overseen by René-Maurice Gattefossé, who was a perfumer and biochemist.  The first time ‘aromatherapy’ appeared was in Gattefossé’s book, titled ‘Aromathérapie, les huiles essentielles, hormones végétales’, which describes the treatment of ailments and medical conditions, using essential oils. Gattefossé was also famous for treating a burn with lavender oil, after an accident in a laboratory, thus discovering the remarkable healing affects that lavender had on the skin.

Aromatic oils or essential oils are powerful and volatile - the ‘life force’ of the plant. These small odour molecules influence the mind, body, and soul, to create changes to physical and emotional wellbeing.  When a person inhales essential oils, the nose and mouth nerves send signals to the brain. Once the molecules reach your brain, they affect the respiratory and limbic systems (limbic system - links to breathing, emotions, memory, stress, heart rate and blood pressure).

The process of inhalation of essential oils affects so many of our bodily systems, which in turn can have tremendous physiological and psychological effects. Essential oils can trigger memories associated with certain scents and smells, equally, we as individuals are drawn to our favourite scents, which enhance our moods.

Relaxing mist sprays

I have recently launched my new aromatherapy calming mist sprays, called ‘Aroma Energies’ and intended to give a wellbeing uplift to a room or calm before bedtime. The three oils I blended, have produced a delightful calming scent, to help you to connect, reflect, and energise to a better place of wellbeing.

Lavender – one of the best known and most versatile of essential oils, is used for its therapeutic properties. A great all round balancing scent, which can relieve stress, calm and sooth a person.

Bergamot – is a refreshing essential oil, expressed from the peel of a fruit which resembles a small yellow orange. An uplifting scent is produced, which is known for being an antidepressant and can have a positive balancing effect on a person’s mood.

Frankincense – is a rich fragrance, yet wonderfully calming and is a spiritual oil, used for meditation. It can slow down a person’s breathing and calm the nervous system, relieving anxiety, depression and provide an emotional uplift.

We have carried out some market testing, and the feedback has been particularly good – even some of the partners liked the smell of the aroma blend, so the most important part of the research stage was successful.

Our spray mist product is presented in a very pretty purple bottle and is available in either 30mls or 60mls. Product details are printed on the label, to help answer any questions. The products are now available to view and purchase in our gift shop.

Lavender gifts

I use dried Provence lavender in my handmade relaxation products, as it is a superior scent, with a distinctively enjoyable smell, connecting the senses to feelings of calm, which can help with sleep and relaxation.

I will be adding more information over the coming months and hope this little insight has been useful.
